Tanzanite comes from the African country of Tanzania and is the transparent form of the mineral Zoisite.  The color range of  Tanzanite normally seen in jewelry is from lavender to a deep bluish purple, with the deep blue variety being the most valuable.  One interesting feature of Tanzanite is the fact that the color of the gem can change slightly, usually from blue to purple and occasionally to yellow or green or brown, as the viewing angle changes.  This is known as pleochroism and it is very strong in Tanzanite.  Tanzanite can also appear as different colors when viewed outdoors or indoors.  Other colors are also occasional found, including yellow, pink and green.  It is accepted practice to heat treat Tanzanite and the resulting color change is ermanent.  The gem is somewhat heat sensitive and may crack when subjected to sudden temperature changes. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners to clean jewelry containing Tanzanite.
