Tahitian
cultured pearls, or “Black” pearls are from French Polynesia. They
range in color from silver to dark gray to bronze to green and even yellow.
Tahitian cultured pearls also have a wide variety of color overtones ranging
from green to pink/rose to ocean blue to platinum or peacock (the most
valuable). Tahitian pearls range in size from 8mm to 18mm. However, black pearls
that are larger than 13mm are very rare. The largest Tahitian pearl ever found
was 25 mm in diameter.
The rarity of Tahitian cultured pearls is due primarily to the fact that growing
larger pearls requires a great deal of time, during which many things can go
wrong: the pearl may become misshapen or the oyster could die. Because of these
risk factors, Tahitian cultured pearls tend to be among the most expensive,
commanding very high prices for quality specimens.
